Variolytics GmbH
About
Variolytics GmbH is a Stuttgart-based Fraunhofer Institute spin-off founded in March 2020 with the mission of eliminating one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions through measurement-driven optimization of wastewater treatment plants. The company develops turnkey emission monitoring systems combining hardware, analytics software, and AI-powered process optimization to help WWTP operators address forthcoming EU Wastewater Directive requirements for direct emission monitoring. Its hardware portfolio includes EmiCo Lite, a compact plug-and-play N2O and CH4 monitoring system for rapid deployment; EmiCo, a high-end multi-point emission monitoring platform for research and large-scale operations; and EmiCo Gateway, an NIS2-compliant secure IoT data hub enabling encrypted real-time data transmission with SCADA integration. On the software side, EmiCo Insight delivers real-time dashboards, automated emission reports, complete carbon footprint calculations, and AI-driven recommendations for process optimization and greenhouse gas reduction. The company's patented Vario two mass spectrometer enables simultaneous gas and liquid phase analysis — claimed as the world's first such system — with response times as fast as 25 milliseconds and detection from low ppb to 100 percent, supporting fermentation monitoring and bioprocess engineering. Variolytics operates a Research Academy providing subsidized hardware and expertise to students and researchers. The company has received the VR Innovation Award 2025, Greentech Innovation Award 2025, and SET Award 2025, and is backed by Fraunhofer Technology Transfer Fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Nordic Alpha Partners, and the European Innovation Council.
