Urban Water Retention ApS
About
Urban Water Retention ApS is a Danish manufacturer that has developed a patented, membrane-free modular stormwater retention system designed specifically for urban climate adaptation. Unlike conventional crate-and-geotextile solutions that repurpose components from other applications, the UWR System is purpose-built from the ground up for rainwater collection and controlled release. Installed just 40 cm below the surface, the system uses a plug-and-play modular design that can be extended indefinitely in length, width, and height—no membranes or geotextiles are required. Each module carries an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) covering the complete solution, and the system is engineered for a service life exceeding 75 years, roughly double that of comparable membrane-based retention systems. This extended lifespan yields lower total cost of ownership and reduced CO2 emissions according to the company's lifecycle analysis. UWR developed the system in collaboration with Danish municipalities and utility companies, aligning its design with 14 of Copenhagen's sustainability goals including land use, climate resilience, and urban livability. Beyond the core retention basin, UWR offers complementary tree planting systems (Træplante system) that integrate urban tree irrigation with stormwater management, and rain garden solutions (Regnbede) for green infrastructure. All products are manufactured in Denmark, and the company is exhibiting at IFAT Munich 2026.
