upwater AG
About
upwater AG is a Swiss environmental technology company founded in 2022 as a spin-off from Eawag (the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology), headquartered in Dubendorf and 100% founder-owned. The company provides two core monitoring services for wastewater treatment plants. Its NOTOS measurement system delivers continuous exhaust air monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions—N2O (nitrous oxide), CH4 (methane), CO2, O2, and NOx—across up to 14 simultaneous measurement points. Developed and validated over 20 measurement years at Eawag, NOTOS integrates with plant control systems (Leitsysteme), provides web-based access with alarm functionality, and supports aeration optimization, energy reduction, and climate reporting including participation in Switzerland's Klik incentive program. The second offering is weekly 16S-rRNA DNA sequencing of WWTP microbiomes: plant staff collect samples and mail them to the upwater laboratory in Horw, where automated analysis produces reports with temporal trends, key species identification, benchmarking, early-warning alerts for process instability, and antibiotic resistance monitoring. Process engineering advisory services combine biomonitoring data with operational data to deliver actionable optimization recommendations. upwater was selected for Zurich's KlimUp funding program and received support from Klimastiftung Schweiz, targeting Switzerland's approximately 280 wastewater treatment plants with potential expansion into Germany and Austria.
