About

SmartD Technologies, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, designs and manufactures the Clean Power VFD line of variable frequency drives — the first VFDs to employ Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET transistor technology instead of conventional IGBTs. The Clean Power VFD uses an Active Front End (AFE) architecture combined with a patented algorithm and embedded filters to produce a pure sine wave output, eliminating the need for external harmonic filters and achieving near-unity power factor, ultra-low total harmonic distortion below 3%, and regenerative braking capability. This filter-less design reduces enclosure footprint by up to 50% and supports unlimited motor cable lengths — demonstrated in a City of Stratford case study with a 1,400-foot cable run. Current models span the S3 and S4 frame sizes from 18.5 kW to 55 kW (25 to 75 HP) at 400–600V input, with specific part numbers including SDB-1-2185-A (18.5 kW/480V), SDB-1-2220-A (22 kW/480V), SDB-2-2220-A (22 kW/600V), and SDB-2-2300-A (30 kW/600V). Additional power ranges are planned for 2026. The company recently closed a $15 million CAD financing round co-led by Hammond Power Solutions and Desjardins Capital. SmartD serves municipal water and wastewater, utilities, mining, HVAC, data centers, agriculture, and industrial manufacturing through distribution partners across North America and Europe.
