Proteus Instruments is a UK-based water quality monitoring company and recipient of the 2022 Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation, specializing in real-time multiparameter sensor technology developed in partnership with RS Hydro. The company's flagship Proteus Multiparameter Sensor platform measures over 30 parameters simultaneously using fluorescence spectroscopy, providing instant proxies for parameters like BOD, COD, and E. coli that traditionally require days of lab analysis. Fluorescence-based measurements include tryptophan, CDOM, DOC, TOC, chlorophyll A, blue-green algae, coliforms, crude and refined oils, optical brighteners, fluorescein, and rhodamine dye. Physiochemical sensors cover dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, temperature, conductivity, salinity, TDS, and ORP. Ion-selective electrodes monitor ammonium, ammonia, nitrate, chloride, bromide, calcium, and sodium. The newly launched proSONDE is a standalone multiparameter sonde with antifouling technology. Proteus also supplies solar-powered data buoys for open-water and bathing-water monitoring and telemetry systems for remote data transmission. Notable deployments include the H2NOW Chicago real-time river monitoring network, the River Wye and Thames catchment monitoring program, Manila Bay coastal stations, and the STREAM project in Swansea.
