Nuvoda
About
Nuvoda, headquartered at 608 Gaston Street in Raleigh, North Carolina, develops and manufactures the Mobile Organic Biofilm System (MOB), a patented wastewater treatment intensification technology. Founded in 2009 as Renewable Fibers, Inc., the company partnered with Jacobs (then CH2M Hill) in 2013 to develop the MOB process, which holds two patents. MOB is a hybrid approach combining elements of IFAS and Aerobic Granular Sludge methodologies, using BioKarrier media — 100% plant-derived lignocellulosic carriers containing no plastics or microplastics — that circulate freely through secondary treatment processes and into secondary clarification. The mobile biofilm carriers cultivate layered microbial communities enabling simultaneous nitrification/denitrification and enhanced biological phosphorus removal. A media retention screen maintains BioKarrier media within a closed-loop process for continuous biofilm development. The MOB system improves Sludge Volume Index, reduces effluent TSS, increases clarifier capacity, enhances sludge dewaterability, and reduces chemical consumption. Applications include process intensification, effluent clarification, cold weather nitrification, wet weather and peak flow handling, emergency response, and both greenfield and retrofit installations. Installation requires no downtime and minimal equipment intervention, making MOB suitable for rapid deployment at existing facilities.
