Membrion, Inc.
About
Membrion is a Seattle, Washington-based developer and manufacturer of Electro-Ceramic Desalination (ECD) technology for industrial wastewater treatment, founded in 2016 by Greg Newbloom. Unlike conventional membrane systems that trap contaminants on filter surfaces, ECD applies an electrical field across ceramic membranes to actively transport dissolved salts and metals into a concentrated side stream, functioning analogously to a kidney rather than a coffee filter. This subtractive approach enables selective removal of dissolved ions without pressure, chemical precipitation, or ion exchange, and the ceramic membrane construction tolerates low pH, foulants, oxidizers, solvents, and complex wastewater chemistry while maintaining stable performance across changing concentrations and batch discharge conditions. Membrion offers ECD Solutions for full-scale deployment and the Cascade pilot system for customer evaluation before commercial commitment. The technology integrates alongside existing treatment infrastructure including chemical precipitation, reverse osmosis, evaporators, cooling towers, ion exchange, and electrowinning systems. Primary markets include semiconductor manufacturing, where ECD stabilizes complex wastewater streams and recovers copper and other critical minerals; metal finishing, enabling dissolved metal removal and zero liquid discharge strategies; and food, beverage, and consumer packaged goods, where dissolved salt removal strengthens water reuse. Emerging applications span EV battery manufacturing and mining. Membrion was named to the 2026 Global Cleantech 100 and partners with Ecolab, Samsung Ventures, W.L. Gore, and TTX.
