About

Gross-Wen Technologies (GWT), headquartered at 404 Main Street in Slater, Iowa, develops and commercializes algae-based wastewater treatment systems using its patented Revolving Algal Biofilm (RAB) technology. The RAB system employs vertically oriented conveyor belts that grow algae on their surface, where the biomass absorbs nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater while utilizing sunlight and atmospheric CO2. Harvested algae is pelletized and purchased back by GWT for sale as slow-release algal-based fertilizer, creating a revenue stream that offsets treatment costs. The system operates with ultra-low energy input, requires no chemical additions, and recovers nutrients rather than simply removing them. GWT serves three primary markets: municipal wastewater treatment including tertiary, secondary, and primary treatment plus anaerobic digestate nutrient recovery; industrial food and beverage processing including corn and grain facilities; and agricultural operations including dairy. Full-scale operational installations are running in Pasco, Washington; Iowa City, Iowa; and Slater, Iowa, with additional installations in Sioux City and Muscatine, Iowa; Wahoo, Nebraska; and York, United Kingdom. Pilot projects span from Chicago's O'Brien and Stickney facilities to Singapore. The RAB system is positioned as the most cost-effective sustainable alternative to conventional nutrient removal methods, claiming the lowest life-cycle costs on the market. GWT holds the trademark for the tagline 'We don't just think green, we grow it.'
