EssDe GmbH is a German process engineering company specializing in biological nitrogen removal from wastewater through deammonification technology. The company's flagship EssDe process converts ammonium-rich sidestream flows — typically from sludge dewatering liquor — directly to nitrogen gas using anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, significantly reducing the energy and carbon demand compared to conventional nitrification-denitrification. A mainstream variant, EssDe-M, applies the same deammonification principle to mainstream wastewater flows, targeting plants pursuing energy self-sufficiency. Beyond nitrogen removal, EssDe offers the S::Select process, a biological selector system designed to combat bulking sludge by creating favorable conditions for well-settling floc-forming bacteria over filamentous organisms. The S::Select process is paired with S::Control, a dedicated automation and monitoring platform for process optimization. Recent installations include the first S::Select plant in Sweden in 2026 and an EssDe deammonification facility in Luxembourg in 2022. EssDe also provides consulting, process design, commissioning support, and operator training for both its deammonification and sludge-settling technologies.
