Decomposition Co., Ltd., a startup founded by researchers at Handong Global University and headquartered in Pohang, South Korea, pursues microbiological answers to microplastic pollution across detection, removal, and degradation. Its foundation is a library of more than 40 microorganism strains that break down synthetic polymers, from which enzyme formulations are extracted. A biosensor test kit uses microbial enzyme mixtures to fluoresce in the presence of plastic particles, handling up to 100 samples at once while claiming over 90 percent lower cost and 20 percent better accuracy than conventional FT-IR or pyrolysis GC-MS methods. The consumer brand 5mm offers a baby bottle cleanser, a dish soap, and an edible microplastic remover. Korea's Ministry of Environment has granted funding, and the company targets European markets.
