Bohn Biofilter
About
Bohn Biofilter Corp., founded in 1986 and based in Tucson, Arizona, manufactures natural biofiltration systems for odor and emission control at wastewater treatment plants, landfills, food processing facilities, petroleum sites, and industrial solvent operations. The company was established by Hinrich Bohn, PhD, a soil chemist who spent over 30 years researching the properties of soil as a biofilter medium before commercializing the technology. Bohn offers two system configurations. The Raised Floor Biofilter draws foul air through corrosion-resistant FRP ductwork and an odor control fan, distributes it across a plenum rock layer, and pushes it upward through a proprietary blend of sands, soils, and topsoil media where naturally occurring microbial colonies consume and oxidize odorous compounds. An integrated sprinkler irrigation system maintains media moisture, and optional sound enclosures and grease filters address noise and FOG concerns. The Perforated Pipe Biofilter replaces the raised floor with perforated distribution pipes embedded in the media and a geomembrane liner that separates the filter media from native soil while collecting excess water and leachate for drainage. The pipe clean-outs are accessible via CCTV for inspection and maintenance. Both configurations achieve nearly autonomous operation with microbial populations that self-regulate in response to variable gas loading throughout the day and across seasons. Cover layer options include decorative rock, grass, native plantings, and drivable surfaces. Bohn Biofilter reports hundreds of installations worldwide across climates from Phoenix to Shanghai and is a member of the AZ Water Association and the Water Environment Federation.
