autarkize GmbH
About
autarkize GmbH, founded in 2022 and based in Pfronten in Bavaria's Allgäu region, is a climate technology startup that develops compact, modular pyrolysis plants converting organic biomass residues into usable energy and EBC-certified biochar through a carbon-negative closed-loop process. The company emerged from over 25 years of underlying pyrolysis technology development and secured €2.3 million in seed funding in October 2024, backed by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), winning first place on the Allgäu start-up stage. Their containerized systems come in three sizes: the autarkize M (1.2 MW fuel input, processing 2,250 tonnes annually, producing 450 tonnes of biochar and removing 1,400 tonnes of CO₂ per year), the autarkize L (2.4 MW, 4,500 t/yr throughput, 900 t biochar), and the autarkize XL (4.8 MW, 9,000 t/yr throughput, 1,800 t biochar). The pyrolysis gas output — approximately 25% hydrogen, 30% carbon monoxide, 15% methane, and 25% CO₂ — has energy density comparable to biogas and, through autarkize's innovative gas conditioning system, is compatible with standard CHP units and gas burners without special equipment. Feedstocks include pomace, fermentation residues, sewage sludge, green waste, mill residues, and waste wood. The company models four revenue streams: renewable energy sales (€120,000-600,000/yr), biochar sales (€130,000-500,000/yr), CDR certificates (€30,000-800,000/yr), and avoided disposal costs (€50,000-250,000/yr), with system amortization in 2-5 years. Target sectors include agriculture, municipal heating networks, biogas plants, composting, and industrial process heat.
Key Products
