Aries Clean Energy (formerly PHG Energy)
About
Aries Clean Technologies (formerly Aries Clean Energy and originally PHG Energy), headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, designs, builds, owns, and operates proprietary fluidized bed gasification systems that convert wastewater biosolids into energy and beneficial byproducts. Founded in 2010 with over 20 patents, the company's flagship Linden, New Jersey facility processes 430 tons per day of biosolids and is recognized as the world's largest biosolids gasification plant. The core gasification process reduces biosolid volume by up to 95 percent while destroying PFAS forever chemicals, producing syngas for energy recovery and Bio-Fly-Ash—a trademarked byproduct usable as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete production. Aries also produces Aries GREEN biochar through downdraft gasification originally developed for wood waste and scrap tires. The company eliminates capital risk for municipalities by building, owning, and operating facilities, providing stable and predictable pricing as an alternative to landfilling and incineration. In April 2025, Aries announced proven commercial-scale PFAS destruction in wastewater biosolids. Regional hauling emissions decrease by approximately 75 percent through local processing. CEO Kari Mueller leads the company with Spring Lane Capital as lead investor, and Aries plans to bring three additional facilities online within four years.
Key Products
Proprietary industrial-scale gasification technology that thermally converts biosolids from wastewater treatment into syngas, reducing volume by up to 95% and destroying PFAS chemicals.
Gasification technology originally developed for converting wood waste, scrap tires, and municipal sludge into synthetic fuel gas, with throughput capacity of 64 tons per day.
Beneficial reuse product produced from gasification of organic waste streams, suitable as a soil amendment or carbon sequestration material.
Beneficial byproduct from biosolids gasification that can be used as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete production.
Turnkey facility operation where Aries builds, owns, and operates gasification plants at or near wastewater treatment facilities, providing municipalities with a cost-effective alternative to landfilling biosolids.
Gasification process proven at commercial scale to destroy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater biosolids, addressing the emerging contamination crisis.
Energy recovery from gasification syngas through integrated power generation systems, producing electricity that can be returned to the wastewater treatment facility.
