Akanthas applies AI-driven image analysis to solid waste management from Toulouse, France. Founders Viviana Contreras (CEO, PhD in environmental processes engineering) and Nicolas Jaouen (CTO, PhD in numerical simulation) built the offering around a proprietary smart image sensor mounted at roughly six meters, where one unit watches up to four containers simultaneously and reads fill level, weight, sorting quality, and cross-contamination. The platform proceeds in four steps - harvesting container data, centralizing it on a user-friendly interface, analyzing pickups, compactions, and sorting errors with AI, and informing users through real-time anomaly alerts. Two packaged solutions result: Waste Monitoring for live container visibility and Waste Optimization for performance evaluation, automated pickup requests, sorting certificates, and characterization reports, with services extending to inspection of incoming waste at sorting centers and transfer stations.
